My Siamese Fighting Fish a/k/a Betta Splendens

I enjoy these little guys. But did you know (I didn't) that they are "air gulpers" (my terminology). They have an organ known as the "labyrinth organ" which allows them to breathe air at the water's surface. If they are prevented from rising to the surface they can "drown".  My most recent Betta comes up every 55 seconds and gulps air.   The male also builds a "bubble nest".  He blows bubbles and groups them together usually at the surface. After the female lays her eggs on the bottom he goes down and carries the eggs up (in his mouth) and deposits them under the bubble nest.
